Every black person who talks about race has an experience where they have been interrogated about their focus on issues of black and white. Rarely does a person of color who is non-black acknowledge that the most intense forms of racial assault and discrimination in our nation have been directed primarily at black people. Professing this understanding and allegiance with black anti-racist struggles would do more to affirm challenges to white supremacy than competing for the status of who will receive more attention. The fact is when black people receive that greater attention from the dominant white society it is usually negative. bell hooks in Writing Beyond Race: Living Theory and Practice (p. 16)

Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine are giving $70 million to USC in Los Angeles to establish a four-year undergraduate program for students interested in a mix of the arts, visual design, entrepreneurship, computer science and marketing. The gift will create the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation, with the intention of attracting students “who challenge conventional views of art and industry.”

so, i was talking to this young lady who told me that she wouldn’t want to date me because i had black eyes. and that i struck me odd. black eyes? i always thought i had brown eyes. yeah, they were dark, but they would really shine in the sun or under some bright light. did i look like an alien to her or something? being who i am, i wasn’t really bothered by it and she wouldn’t be worth dating if she was buggin’ over something so superficial.
but then i began got to thinking about others. a lot of celebrities like Rihanna and Michael Ealy got them crazy hazel and blue eyes, and i’ve seen a lot of black people put in contacts to try and imitate the look. my only concern about that is that if you do that, do it because you want to, not because you’re insecure about your looks. be proud of what you have.
whether they be blue, black, green, or grey, your eyes are beautiful the way they are. real talk.
